“En Lullaby for mitt Fars Traeland” (“A Lullaby for my Father’s Traeland”)

My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Norway in the early 1950’s, but frequently returned to their home country throughout their lives. My memories of them are concentrated within the Brooklyn apartment they had occupied from the time my father was a small child. This space contained all of the remnants of my father’s childhood and family history here in America.

This project was based on my exploration of the items contained within this apartment, upon the death of my grandmother in 2002. It was created to preserve my memories of this space and the history of those who lived within it. Each panel of this piece combines different points in time within a structure that remained virtually unchanged. The foremost layer of paint is a partial reproduction of a family photograph taken of my grandmother’s home in Traeland, Norway.
